Firsts

1. Who was your first prom date?
Never went to prom. Never really regretted it either.

2. Do you still talk to your first love?
Sure, if you consider my first love being sushi.

3. What was your first alcoholic drink?
Beer. At the age of six. My mom was trying to make me hate it, I think. She did a good job - I don't drink anything except cocktails now. Beer and wine still taste a little off putting to me.

4. What was your first job?
Art studio assistant, to pay for art lessons. I washed brushes, filled paint pots, checked charcoal pencils, and cleaned. I was twelve.

5. What was your first car?
1990 or thereabouts maroon Honda Accord station wagon. This year marks my 10th year on the road. =) Still ticketless, still accident-less. Won't they lower my insurance rate already?

6. Who was the first person to text you today?
NO TEXT PLEASE. Although I used it frequently in HK...AND LOVED IT TO BITS.

7. Who is the first person you thought of this morning?
Me, of course.

8. Who was your first grade teacher?
Mrs. Augusto, Commodore Stockton Skills School. She was an older Asian/Pacific Islander lady who showed WAY more cleavage than I would be comfortable with while teaching.

9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
USA

10. Who was your first best friend and are you still friends with him/her?
I still reserve the title of "best friend" for my significant other whom I have yet to meet. But my closest friend is Janet. Followed closely by Alex, Liv, and Team Taiyuan.

11. What was your first sport played?
Swimming.

12. Where was your first sleepover?
My cousins Shirley and Kitty's place.

13. Who was the first person you talked to today?
My dad.

14. Whose wedding were you in the first time?
Cousin Shirley's. It was a traditional Chinese wedding complete with games and tea ceremony. I was ten, and it was awesome.

15. What was the first thing you did this morning?
Write. There isn't much else to do at 2 AM.

16. What was the first concert you ever went to?
Does SYC count? And does that make me a loser in the music world?

17. First tattoo or piercing?
Ears. I was six. They haven't existed for a long time now. But not for long if I have anything to say about it! REM: this time, stick with stainless steel studs. Nickel allergies are killer.

18. First foreign country you went to?
USA.

19. What was your first run in with the law?
Shouldn't the question be phrased "run against the law?" If you run in WITH the law, doesn't that mean you are following it?

20. When was your first detention?
Never had detention. I did stand outside the door in sixth grade for "pencil fencing." It wasn't my fault! My desk mate kept waving his pencil in my face and the teacher saw me just as I blocked it. Mrs. Melton was probably having a bad teacher day, now that I've been on the other side.

21. What was the first state you lived in?
A state of confusion.

22. Who was the first person to break your heart?
The plight of my students. Weirdly, they don't see it as a plight. Which is good, because it really should be considered an advantage.

23. Who was your first roommate?
My brother. He used to make me stand outside the door when he went to the bathroom at night. I fell asleep. He never woke me up. My mom would find me sprawled across the hall in the morning.

24. Where did you go on your first limo ride?
Never been. I'm cool with that.

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU CHANGED IN FOUR YEARS?

Four years ago:

1) How old were you?
21

2) Where did you go to school and/or work?
UC Davis. At the moo lab.

3) Where did you live?
The Colleges at UCD, Lady Ho Tung Hall at HKU, home in STKN.

4) Where did you hang out?
Home, other people's homes, the library, the arboretum.

5) What did you do for fun?
Watch anime, read, write, bike.

6) What did you look like?
Shoulder length hair, cut in layers. It was the beginning of my style revolution from jeans and t-shirts, so I was probably throwing in some skirts and fun tops every so often. Definitely heavier than I am now. Glasses, constantly.

7) What was your favorite album?
First Contact by Orange Range, I think.

8) What was your favorite food/drink?
Lemon tea. Ramen with veggies and egg.

9) Who did you hang out with?
Family mostly. Church people second mostly.

10) How often did you go out?
Um, every day? I had school and work, so I had to go out. I didn't party, never did, but I liked taking short day trips.

11) Single or taken?
Single

12) Where did you see yourself in four years?
Working, in my own place, far far away from STKN. Probably I was beginning to want to teach abroad then.

Today

1) How old are you?
25

2) Where do you go to school and/or work?
CSUS. Young Rembrandts. Sac City Unified School District.

3) Where do you live?
At home with parents. There are good things and bad things about it.

4) Where do you hang out?
Home, other people's homes, library, any bookstore, Target.

5) What do you do for fun?
Crochet, fold paper stars, watch random things on hulu, make lists.

6) What do you look like?
Long, layered hair. I live in flip flops. Glasses most of the time, contacts for sports and social occasions. At my lowest adult weight. =) No more watches. Cell phone constantly on hand. Less spotty, careful skin care, light make-up, better wardrobe.

7) What is your favorite album?
Anything by Edith Piaf.

8) What is your favorite food/drink?
Korean tofu pot. Citron tea.

9) Who do you hang out with?
Family mostly. Old friends second mostly. Church people third mostly. Long distance correspondence most of all. =\

10) How often do you go out?
Still every day. I like free museum days, walks in the park, long bike rides, and of course Target runs.

11) Single or taken?
Single

12) Where do you see yourself in four years?
Teaching in my own classroom, perhaps on my way to a Ph.d or law degree, far far away from STKN. And if I'm reading the signs right, probably in a relationship. Maybe. My outlook in this area has changed so much in just the past two years alone.

09 February 2009 @ 08:54 am
Over a month late. So sue me. =p

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Entered grad school. Went to Florida and Denver. Regularly begin using "damn" and "hell" in my written and internal conversations (hey, they are both found in the Bible). Seriously considered the path towards a Ph.D.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept about 75% of my 2008 resolutions. Yep, I've made more.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Squishy was born into the Year of the Rat! =) Some other people I know gave birth too, but I don't think they are "close." Not that I'm not happy for them, just answering the question as worded.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No one close.

5. What countries did you visit?
2008 was all about domestic travel.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
In terms of stuff, I would really really like a nintendo DS and Animal Crossing Wild World. Perhaps a Wii as well with Animal Crossing Revolution. Also some nice clothes for both work and play. Otherwise, I was pretty content with what I had in 2008.

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The dates of Denver, Seattle, and Florida. =)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Surviving the first part of grad school.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Surviving the first part of grad school.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing big.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My first MacBook. A new cell phone that records video and changes songs in the mp3 player by just shaking it. The entire Wolves Chronicles children's books series by Joan Aiken.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My first graders. XD

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My mother's.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Grad school. Gas.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seeing Team Taiyuan!

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
That insipid "Hearts all over the world tonight" song. 2008 was kind of an annoying drag. Just like the song.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner or fatter? (c) richer or poorer?
(a) hmm, hard to tell. In general, probably sadder. But I'm ok with it because I'm looking forward to the future.
(b) thinner
(c) poorer (see #14)

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Travel. Visiting friends. Reading. Tennis. Biking. Swimming. Volleyball. I can do these last three all day long.

19. What do you wish you’d spent less time doing?
Being around unlikeable people.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Quietly.

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?
No.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Weeds, Dexter, Death Note, Shikabane Hime,...I watch too much tv online.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Yes.

24. What was the best book you read?
The Witch of Clatteringshaws and Midwinter Nightingale together.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Yui

26. What did you want and get?
Getting into grad school.
A new laptop.
Enough money to sufficiently see me through this round of grad school without having to worry or take on a night-shift job.

27. What did you want and not get?
Spiritual peace.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
I liked Batman Begins but that's not a 2008 film. I would probably have liked The Dark Knight if I had taken the time to watch it.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Turned a quarter-century, also quietly. Went to phase II orientation. Did some errands on campus. Went home. Received my gift to myself from shopping online. Got a couple phone calls and cards. Ate cake.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Living in my own place with nice roommates.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Discovering layering and hi-low have turned my fashion world upside down.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In July I got in line at the supermarket at the same time as someone else and I didn't yield (-8 points). Last week I ate my brussel sprouts (1 points). In November I put gum in [info]pancake_sama's hair (-12 points). In September I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). Last Monday I set [info]katryna7's puppy on fire (-66 points).

Overall, I've been nice (241 points). For Christmas I deserve an Easy-Bake Oven!

Sincerely,
bunnyhoparound

Comment and I'll give you a letter. Then you have to list ten things you LOVE that begin with that letter. Afterward, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

1. Netherlands
2. Noodles in soup, especially udon and the flat rice noodles
3. Night time
4. Nostalgia
5. Nigiri sushi
6. Ng's!
7. Nina Ricci
8. Night markets

Ok, so I cheated with two countries and two things that start with "night." But I do like them, so they count. =)

After mulling it over for a long time, I've decided to move the education blog here. It's technically not a "big" move, as I've had some form or other of blogger for 6 years now, and just a few months more than I've had an LJ. Not that blogger has been immune to my deleting tendencies either.

In any case, that's where my education stories will be housed from now until indefinitely. I'll still check back here - there are actually some pretty good LJ blogs, despite the isolation - although not as frequently, I suppose.

Thanks for reading and good luck with all your blogging goals.

For some reason, I’m always getting these educator magazines in the mail. It’s probably because I belong to the SCTA - and I only belong to that because they give student teachers (who are NOT covered by the school they student teach at, by the way) extensive professional insurance (i.e. you’re covered if parents decide to sue you for an injury to their kid on school grounds) for a nominal yearly fee.

Yesterday, the Scholastic Instructor magazine arrived. Now, many of these magazines are geared towards middle/upper-middle class SES schools and students. Which doesn’t apply to me. So I tend to just toss them in the magazine basket and they stay there until recycling day, or if I give it to my teacher friends.

But today was a pretty unsuccessful Sunday school days (IMO); not due to the kids but due to other adults and my unpreparedness to deal with their distractions and general getting in the way and undermining my authority.

Note to all adult visitors in any classroom: it is SO NOT COOL to undermine the head teacher’s authority. You just DON’T DO IT. We student teachers are told to NEVER intervene in behavioral issues or to distract from the lesson, unless we are expressly invited by the main teacher, for very obvious reasons. You may not agree with the teacher's methods, but it isn't your place to show that in front of the students. The only exception is if the teacher is doing something in the realm of abuse. End of discussion.

Continuing on with the story...

I tossed the said magazine aside when it came in yesterday, like usual. But when I got home today, I pulled it out, trying to find reassurance that the things I said to those other adults were correct and proper and fair, and I didn’t deserve the eye-rolls and “she’s soooo overly possessive and bossy” looks that I got.

Well, I didn’t find anything specific to use as proof, but just flipping though it calmed me down. The tone of the magazine was all about the benefit for the education of students, academically, socially, physically, et al. I’m not crazy to think that facilitating a smooth, focused lesson is higher on the priority list than adults showing off and giving each other pats on the back. I swear I’m not.

Here’s a stand-out quote from an interview with Rachel Ray:

Interviewer, “What do you enjoy about interacting with kids?”
Ray: “Everything! I prefer kids to adults most of the time. They are fearless, have a great sense of humor, and always say more intelligent things than grown-ups.”

I would also add that kids DO more intelligent things than grown-up too. Rachel Ray earned my respect with just this one quote, despite the fact that she grates on my nerves usually.

But then, she’s a grown-up.

Part of the reason why I blog so much, in both reading and writing, is for a sense of expression and release from the everyday ho-drum that takes up WAY too much of the Pie of Life.

Now, another reason is to escape the clutches of Corporate America, hereby known as C.A. Not to be confused with CA, as in the state. Although from the way the budget is going, CA might very well fall under a subcategory of C.A.

I have never been that worried/angry/::insert negative emotion here:: at C.A., mainly because I’ve never had that much personal experience with them. Whatever encounters with them have always been on a benign footing at worst.

Today changes every thing.

I’ve been writing and thinking about this all day, leading to the third massive headache in as many days. Also to the conclusion that this has been a long time developing issue, not just a sudden epiphany, although it seems like it.

Why? Because I was somehow caught in the C.A. bottom-lining not once, not twice, but 5 times today. Five. A whole hand worth. So technically, C.A. just took away one of my hands today.

And I will forever hate them for it.

I admit, all of these incidents occurred due to my ignorance, stubbornness, and/or impatience. And I am smarter this evening than I was this morning for all of that. I’m also much more determined to not get caught again.

Which leads to...

How does one teach this kind of stuff in the classroom? Being smart about money activities such as budgeting, learning how to bank/balance checkbooks, etc seem rather out-dated considering all the high-tech, super-fine *ahem::misleading::ahem* print that C.A. uses to coat all it touches. The fact that many of my students’ families deal with welfare and food stamps adds to the irrelevancy.

Idea #1: A firm understanding of academic, business, and legal language might help. English of course. The whole theme of Phase I was about language.

Idea #2: Develop personal political clout. Contact your representatives, know how to seek information and help, connect with other people in the same boat, have a voice. If government is only as effective as the people, then an ineffective government reflects on an ineffective and complacent people.

Idea #3: Know the choices. Small business is the fastest growing sector of the economy, or so I hear. I also hear that small businesses are more willing to at least seriously consider consumer requests/suggestions. After all, small businesses are about that: the quality of products/services they provide. As opposed to about external investments and the status quo of the internal ladder (including, but not limited to, that CEO salary conflict so often publicized).

These are pretty wide, all-encompassing ideas, but I can see some specific student projects that might teach them. I’m sure there are more, narrower but just as important, ideas other than these three too.

In any case, Club Against-C.A. has one more card carrying member.

Here is a view from the other side, since my negativity towards C.A. comes from being the consumer:

Because it's still summer vacation for me (it's starting to seem like a VERY LONG summer - although when Oct/Nov rolls around I'll be wishing for winter break) I get to catch the morning news shows often.

I'm not a big fan of morning news shows (what is with everyone's perkiness?) but inexplicably, I always find myself tuning in to The Big 3 (Today, Early, and GMA). Today, I saw this segment on one of them (forget which, they're all the same really) about this book So Sexy So Soon on early childhood sexual realization rampant among today's youth, authored by Jean Kilbourne and (a very familiar name from my ed texts) Diane E. Levin.

These types of books (self-help crossed with pop psych crossed with journalism crossed with Chicken Soup for the Soul) are not normally my type of books. But I think I might give this one a shot mainly because I don't really understand the reasons and workings of 12 year olds (or younger!) wanting to emulate 32 year olds. This goes for boys as well as girls. I'm edging on 25 and some of my students are more sexually/gender aware than I am!

Not that being sexually aware is bad. I'm all for it. But I find it very sad that an entire generation skips the whole "middle child life" and jump right in on adulthood. Supposedly this explains some of the behavior of people in their 20's now (*ahem*).

Middle childhood is such an awesome time; I sometimes find myself reverting to it (and liking it). It's a time when you're old enough to make your own decisions on a wide variety of things, yet young enough to make mistakes and do fun, stupid things without looking like an idiot (and yes, even if you are only 22, launching yourself off the roof of a three story building on a skateboard with no protective gear DOES make you look like a moron, moron). This kind of thing isn't even new - Lolita, anyone?

I know I'm probably an anomally for preferring books and sleeping under the stars as a kid than to attracting boys, dating, or even fashion. I STILL prefer books and sleeping under the stars to dating, although I like to think I've developed a higher fashion sense than jeans-and-a-t-shirt/polo for work.

Ah, I kinda see why most of my cohortmates prefer younger grades. They don't have to deal with this in K or 1st grade, while even in 4th grade, there are girls who wear tight-belly bareing shirts and pants with "hottie" emblazoned on their behinds and boys who whistle and stare when I bend too far forward in a lower-cut shirt. <-- by the way, people say double stick tape works, but it has yet to give me any satisfactory results. I don't even wear anything extreme!

Supposedly, one can balance both the kid side and the burgeoning-self/sexually-aware side, but that probably takes a much more level-headed person than I. Wish Juno would write an advice column for me--er, kids.

Yesterday was the first day of the 2008-09 school year at the major school district in my town. When I was a kid, I never remembered school starting so FREAKING EARLY. Sucks for the kids today; they don’t even get released for summer break early, like say, the middle of April. It’s still the normal early June.

This school district isn’t even the earliest starter around my area – in a smaller town about 8 miles away, students have been back at school for nearly two weeks now.

I’m so glad CSUS and SCUSD doesn’t start until September. Just another pro for SCUSD and another con for the districts closer to home.

I've been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes prep work for teaching this summer, and that's why I've been AWOL lately.  Most of that work consists of creating/finding/tweaking activities, reading and re-reading textbooks and articles, and versing myself on up-to-date kid culture.  I've come up with bucketloads of material and I'll describe more about that later, but I just can't resist posting this now.

This is why cuteoverload.com continues to be one of my favorite sites of all time.  Periodically, they post some real hall-of-fame-worthy things that just can't be beat.  I also love the international flavor of it all.  Cute is a language anyone can understand.

A car is headed south at 73 miles per hour along a semi-truck-infested freeway.  The trucks, on average, are going 45 miles per hour.  There is an easterly wind of 35 miles per hour.

How much does it cost to get the windshield replaced?

Every other time I post or comment on LJ, my computer up and crashes.  Windows gives the typical error reporting window and then opens an IE window providing more information/solutions/causes to the problem.  Except that there is no known solution or cause to this particular problem apparently.

Then they ask if the information given was helpful.

Well, no.  Of course not.  Idiot algorithm that makes the Windows error reporting system ask every time "Is this information helpful?" without checking if there's an actual solution.  It's like a person dancing horribly and singing off key a song about the periodic table when you are trying to memorize some of the items on it.  Of course it doesn't help.  And you going through a whole five minute reboot/reporting procedure doesn't either.

End of rant.
